Read previewWhen the automotive industry started looking toward an electrified future, Detroit automakers decided to throw their hat in the ring with what they do best: Pickup trucks. Electric pickup truck pioneer Rivian has also warned of slowing growth, and Elon Musk's Tesla already appears to be offering some purchase incentives for the Cybertruck. Only four EVs sell in that range at the moment, according to Edmunds, and none of them are sold by Detroit automakers. On average, EVs sold for around $61,700 last year, $14,250 more expensive than the typical price paid for non-electric vehicles, Edmunds said. AdvertisementGM is taking another approach, pulling back on EV production as the company plans to bring more hybrids (a segment that has seen demand increase while EV demand wanes) to the North American market later this year.

I don’t know what time it was when my husband at the time, the rock climber Tommy Caldwell, finally scrambled over the summit. The sun had risen sometime during the first part of the climb and had set again hours later. He had just completed the second free ascent of the Direct Route on the northwest face of Half Dome, a 2,000-foot climb in Yosemite National Park. The climber Todd Skinner spent 61 days in 1993 working to establish the Direct Route, then considered the most difficult big wall climb in the world, before reaching the top. Hanging in the middle of Half Dome was an ordinary thing.

Eight economists, investment chiefs, and strategists that Business Insider recently spoke to credited healthier-than-anticipated consumer balance sheets and spending for the continued expansion. "Either that, or they're going to be maxed out — they can't get any more money. They're not going to have any liquidity to be able to continue to do the things they're going to do." He's also sticking with defensive stocks as consumer spending softens, including those in the consumer staples sector like Clorox (CLX) and Procter & Gamble (PG). Europe is “at risk,” he added, as he welcomed Ulf Kristersson, the prime minister of Sweden, the newest member of NATO. But Mr. Biden also said he remains “determined” that American soldiers will not be necessary to defend Europe. As a White House spokesman put it last week, it is “crystal clear” that the use of ground troops is off the table. But if such incursions were a genuine concern, then ground troops would be an option for the United States and its allies almost by definition. The rationale for NATO participation in the Russo-Ukrainian war is getting fuzzier at the very moment when one would expect it to be getting clearer.

Where Electric Vehicles Are (and Aren’t) Taking Off Across the U.S.Last year, Americans bought more than one million fully electric cars, trucks and SUVs, a record and a milestone for the country’s transition away from gas-powered vehicles. Only two electric vehicles in the analysis, both made by Tesla, cost the same or less than similar gas models. But for now, “there are some very real ways in which, in comparison to conventional vehicles, electric vehicles either really are still struggling to be as good or better, or are struggling against the imagination that they’re not as good or better,” he said.

Opinion | Supreme Court: Trump Stays on the Ballot

Daniel FinkBeverly Hills, Calif. To the Editor:The Supreme Court has decided that an individual state cannot decide who can be on the ballot for a federal election. That would seem to be a reasonable decision, but perhaps a more significant question is whether individual states may adopt their own criteria for who can vote in federal elections. Selective restrictions have already been enacted in many states that will certainly affect the upcoming election. John T. DillonWest Caldwell, N.J.To the Editor:The Supreme Court’s decision to allow Donald Trump to remain on the ballot in Colorado relied in significant part on the potential for hypothetical chaos if each state could make its own determination about the eligibility of a presidential candidate. In doing so, it ignored the real chaos that occurred on Jan. 6, 2021, the same chaos that led the Colorado Supreme Court to order Mr. Trump excluded from the ballot because of his role in the events of that day.

The near-absence of laws criminalizing the practice of fertility fraud until recently means no doctors have yet been criminally charged for the behavior. In 2019, Indiana became the second state, more than 20 years after California, to pass a statute making fertility fraud a felony. He added some of his biological children have “expressed gratitude for their existence” to him and even sent him photos of their own children. Cline’s case spurred lawmakers to pass legislation that outlawed fertility fraud but wasn’t retroactive, meaning he was never prosecuted for it. “In fertility fraud, no parent is saying that – no parent is saying I would have gotten an abortion,” she said.
